Since 1992, Us SKINS fans have done this the night before the new season. “We have a new coach”, “We have a new owner”, “We have a new stadium”, “We have a new QB”… the list goes on…

This “Eve” is different, no really, it’s a little different. OK, it’s not that different. However, here is a difference. We are BORING! Yup, no splash here. That’s Great! No new, big stadium, no new billionaire owner, no re-incarnation of a hall-of-fame coach, no debut of the highest paid ——(fill in the blank); it’s just US, The Redskins. A bunch of young guys, mixed with a few blue collar vets. The Hogs, The fun bunch, Theismann, Riggins, Moseley, Williams, Butz, Rypien…Guys who got muddy, and created a culture. A fight your guts out, winning culture!

So, on the Eve of an improbable NFL season, The Redskins look to build on their blue-collar brand. We don’t know many of their names, and the one’s we do (Grossman), aren’t very exciting. That’s just the way we want it! HAIL SKINS!

This morning, The Sports Junkies on 106.7 had Jason Reid on to discuss the “fail” of his recent article, “the fix is in”, which labeled the QB controversy as being rigged and essentially handed to John Beck many months ago.

Mike Shanahan, in one swift decision, made Reid’s work look rookie, amateur, and clown-like. Reid, who was mostly thrown softballs from the The Junkies

Reid's "FIX", BROKE!

, decided to clown on his sources saying these were the “things” that he was told. This is the biggest telephone game fail in recent history (at least in sports).

Reid had an un-characteristic somber and somewhat apologetic tone, although he wouldn’t say “hey, it was more of a guess at a story”, but it was pretty clear that he needed to create a tone that was anything but defensive. Although, he did throw in a jab at Beck directly, essentially claiming that Beck’s lousy 4th game performance was the primary reason the “fix” got “broke.

When you write for The Washington Post, you can’t let this stuff slide, it’s not the ultra-solid, locked down confidence the readers expect in the content. When you write a blog (like this), you can do and say whatever you want. Reid F*cked it all up, and yes, he should just say so.

Jarvis Jenkins hobbled off the field, and SKINS fans across the DelMarVa held their breath. What’s remarkable is that Jenkins has become such a fan/coach favorite during the pre-season, and this injury early on is quite a concern.

What we know: Jarvis was going to be a starter this year. That’s absolute, he was killing it. He hobbled off, and was clearly uncomfortable. A tweet sent out by Phillip Daniels claims that Jarvis is “Doing OK”, shouldn’t be taken that the injury is minor. Jarvis had full mobility of the knee.

What we need to find out: A sprain is essentially a tear, or a severe pull (which causes tearing) The degree of the sprain is what’s important. An MRI will give an inside peek at the tear (if one exists).

All the details will be out by Friday afternoon, but you can plan on opening day without Jarvis; this is unfortunate, but if Jenkins can muster the guts to get out there VS The NY Giants, he will be even more loved as a Rookie.

I’ve been saying it for years…It just SUCKS when you lose a player after spending $60-$200 on their Jersey! Mcnabb, Haynesworth, and we can keep going of recent Redskins that just didn’t work out (Hell, I have a Deion and Jeff George jersey) …but we still bought the Jerseys.

I’m sorry, but I’m not wearing some bust’s jersey… So, JerseySlaps.com has created a system where you can custom order a new nameplate (for under $15 bucks). I really like how you can mix colors and write anything you want, plus it’s a lightweight velcro system that looks authentic!

Look, I’ve been a diehard SKINS fan since birth (1977), and a DirecTV client since they offered the NFL Sunday ticket. I’m loyal. When I heard about their new “FREE NFL ticket promotion” (*with a contract), I was naturally pissed off.

Hey, if that’s the deal, cool. I’d switch in a heartbeat for free NFL games. However, I’m an existing customer, so, how did I get mine? Here ya go:

DTV: Can I help you?
Me: (after selecting disconnect service) Yes, this kills me, but I need the details on how to cut off my service?
DTV: Sir, can I ask why?
Me: Sure..my neighbor, who’s had Comcast forever, just had a DTV tech leave his house and was telling me how he switched because of the FREE NFL ticket! He said that DTV told him that they were nervous about losing customers b/c of the lockout and they are opening up the ticket for new customers, but I’m sorry, I’ve been a customer forever and then I find out that the Sunday ticket price for me is going up?! That just doesn’t feel right…
DTV: Sir, I understand..the way our advertisements were worded has upset some of our NFL ticket customers, and we’re sorry..
Me: (abruptly) Well, thanks but I can’t raise my weekend football budget just because you guys “feared” the NFL fan-base canceling, I really like your service, and I was excited when the lockout ended, but I’ll go to my neighbor’s, who’s getting it for free, before I become a victim of your fear.
DTV: So, If I’m hearing you right, you’ll stay a customer if we don’t raise your NFL ticket price?
Me: I just want a fair deal, My neighbor is getting it for free. What’s fair for me, who’s been paying for over a decade?
DTV: Hold a sec…we will work this out…(returns) How about half price from what you paid last year?
Me: A good start.
DTV: So, is that agreeable?
Me: What else can you do?
DTV: I think I can do Free HD also…

So, you never want to hear that the assumed starting RB has been sidelined for atleast 2 weeks…So, we won’t tell you that Ryan Torrain has in fact been put on the shelf with a fractured wrist for 2 weeks. Torrain, nicknamed ATV, has been plagued with injuries his entire (short) NFL career. His upright running style allows him to bear the brunt of every hit, from every angle…and that may be to blame for the injuries. Either way, he’s down for a bit.

The Good News: Us SKINS fans get to really see Helu and Hightower.

The Bad News: We have to hear all about re-signing CP, or how we should have kept him.

The Reality: Shanahan still believes that Clinton can be an effective NFL back, but he’s more concerned with changing the culture and personality of The Redskins. Therefore, bringing back Portis would be last resort.

We’ve gotten a ton of emails asking if Portis is an option…safe to say there are plenty of fans that wouldn’t mind if Portis got a shot.

ATV in the garage

This is Washington! The hierarchy goes like this: The Redskins coach, The Redskins QB and then The President of the United States. Of course, if there’s the smallest question about the ability of either/any one of them to perform, panic sets in. Welcome to Panic.

Maybe you’ve seen the tweets, or heard the radio reports. John Beck isn’t looking like starter material, actually, Beck may not be looking like NFL roster material. Particularly Beck’s deep ball, and inability to time it out with the WR’s is being heavily scrutinized. Even more concerning, fans are looking to Rex Grossman for a bail out. Ofcourse, we told you yesterday that Rex is well aware that The Redskins need him…and needs them to pony up in the $$$ department. There’s a great argument that Rex (who only knows The SKINS system) also needs The Redskins. True, but every practice that John Beck throws more completions to the DB’s than the WR’s, the balance starts to tip in Grossman’s favor. Now, in fairness, Beck has had two ‘Heavily-Microscoped’ practices, as well as taking a beating from the national sports media, however, he hasn’t exactly done much to shut anyone up, either.

One more thing, for the people who keep babbling “Rex can’t practice until Thursday anyways…” , That’s true but he could be taking those mental reps, as well as receiving treatments and maybe (oh yea, almost forgot) helping tutor John Beck.

One thing is for sure, If Beck continues to poop away his uncontested chance to practice at QB, he not only ensures Grossman as the starter, he also continues to fatten Rex’s paychecks…Maybe Rex sits this one out until The Redskins have no choice but to pay his ransom?!

Is Beck causing Grossman to raise his price???

Coach Shanahan and The Skins front office have played a real nice game of poker this offseason. Just ask Cullen Jenkins who left several millions on the table, just to see if there were several more. There wasn’t, not for him or anyone else. Jamaal Brown just signed a 5 year deal, after telling The Redskins he wasn’t thrilled at the 1st offer. Here it is Sunday night, and Jamaal has changed his tune, signing the deal after getting nervous that the front office was about to pull the trigger on another free agent.

Rex wants starter money??

There is one exception: Rexy!

The Redskins (both coaches and players) have openly talked about a Becksy VS. Rexy QB competition. Grossman is much more familiar with the system, (A La Houston) but isn’t regarded as a leader and is physically below par. Grossman certainly wouldn’t start on any of the other 31 clubs. However, Beck hasn’t played since 2007, and Mike Shanahan has become the butt of the NFL network’s Warren Sapp, Rich Eisen and Jamie Dukes for going into Pre-Season with John Beck as the starter.

BUT, why would Rex sign for backup money? The Redskins would be desperate without him, I know that sounds ridiculous to say any NFL team would be desperate without Rex Grossman, but it’s the position we are in, and he knows it.

How far Rex can push Shanahan’s patience remains to be seen, one thing is certain; Rex expects more than ‘backup money’ from a team that has openly said he has a chance at starting. Look for a warning shot to fired across someone’s bow very soon, or for the week to begin with these sides agreeing they both need each other and picking up the pens.

To throw a wild card in the mix, wouldn’t it be fun to see The Giants make a run at Rex, for that Week 1 edge. As if we couldn’t despise the G-men anymore…boy, that would do it.
